Very practical “universal socket”, why is banned by the state?  70% don’t know the harm

With the increase in electrical equipment, everyone has more than one or two plug boards in their homes.  There are many dangers, however, the most dangerous of which is fire.

For this kind of products that may have hidden safety risks, the state’s supervision is very large.

On June 1, 2010, THE General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Standardization Administration enforced the new national standard and banned the universal socket, a very common plug board.

Universal socket is often called “universal socket”, this socket above the jack has one of the most obvious characteristics, it is much larger than the ordinary socket board jack, and it has only three jack, but can meet the two and three plug.

But it’s not just called a universal socket because it can accommodate more secondary and tertiary plugs at once

Note: universal socket, larger jack

However, the reason why it is called universal socket is not only because it can satisfy two and three plugs at the same time, but also because it has a relatively large jack, which can be used by almost all electrical plugs of different standards, including British standard, American standard, European standard and so on.

Many homes used to use imported appliances, so this universal socket is really practical.

However, they come at the cost of being less safe, and many of the fires caused by these “universal sockets” have been caused by these plugboards.

Why is universal socket a fire hazard?

Although the universal socket ADAPTS to a variety of different plugs, the wire inside it can only be the same as the ordinary socket, it can not adapt to all different shapes and specifications of the plug.

The spring inside the universal jack is more prone to deformation and damage after long periods of plugging with different standards of plugs — especially if the spring is not in good condition.

If the spring is damaged, the metal plate in contact with the plug can shift, resulting in a reduced or poor contact area with the plug, which increases resistance.

When it transmits electricity to electrical appliances, the larger the resistance is more likely to overheat and cause fire. At ordinary times, when we use electrical appliances with relatively large power, we find that the plug plate becomes hot, which is likely to be the case, and we need to pay attention to it.

Of course, ordinary plug boards may also have the same problem, but ordinary plug boards basically accept only one kind of specification, so even deformation is not a big problem.

Universal sockets have been banned for more than a decade, but they’re still around.

An online survey in 2016 found that 70 percent of consumers are unaware of the potential risks of universal outlets and continue to use them in the office or at home.

Even now, you can still buy these “universal sockets” in small supermarkets, which have much higher penetration rates than standard outlets.

So the question is, why is it still available if it’s banned by the state?

The perennial “Universal socket”

In fact, any banned product can still flow on the market, the most fundamental reason is that it is profitable for merchants.

Note: All are universal sockets

As a “universal socket”, in addition to higher degree of adaptation, in fact, it has a powerful advantage — less space.  These two advantages are destined to it will have a market, there is a market of course it is easy to smell business opportunities.

It also costs far less to make a “universal outlet” than a standard outlet, for two reasons:

1. The benefit of reducing space is the reduction of raw materials, thus reducing costs.

2. Because it has fewer jacks, it uses less metal, which is the most valuable part of a plug board.

With a market and low cost, it makes sense that merchants would risk breaking the law to produce and sell.

Of course, the biggest “assist” is us consumers, most of us do not know whether these products meet the standards, whether there are safety risks, finally create the market.

In fact, because the universal socket itself is a non-compliant product, its production escapes regulation, so they tend to cut corners even more, making the product even more unsafe.

On market, “all-purpose socket” the price is far under those who accord with standard plug board, one has 5 sockets “all-purpose socket” the price is controlled in 10 yuan commonly, and the need that accords with a standard dozens of yuan.

Unsuspecting consumers can easily opt for the more powerful, cheaper, and less space-taking plugboard.

It’s a vicious circle — consumers keep creating a market, and merchants keep producing inferior, sub-standard plugboards.

The only way out of this cycle is to make more consumers aware of the dangers of such plugboards.

So, what kind of wiring board can be chosen?

A lot of people may not be able to identify what kind of wiring board is in line with the standard, because there are a variety of standards, it is difficult for ordinary consumers to recognize.
